Football Stadium Under Soil Heating System

Football Pitch Under Soil Heating Systems

In recent years Electrical Rewind & Repair Services have been working in conjunction with a local company who specialise in undersoil heating for football and rugby pitches. K.E. Pryor & Sons (Pitch Heating Ltd) have been installing systems in the UK and overseas since 1979. Working to the highest possible standards and constantly improving their systems and techniques has made them world leaders in pitch heating systems. The proprietor, Mr Ken Pryor cannot rest until a job is perfect. His inventive mind is always looking to improve their design and strive for perfection. Whilst most companies would be on there way home with the job working Ken would still be on site tweaking the system until it is working perfectly. It's always a pleasure working with K.E. Pryor & Sons because we too believe if a job is worth doing its worth doing properly.

The idea of heating a football pitch is to make the pitch playable in winter conditions. If a match has to be cancelled for frost or snow the financial costs are phenomenal. We are talking hundreds of thousands for some cases. In recent years a lot of clubs have seen the importance of having pitches heated and many clubs are now also heating their training grounds. K.E. Pryor & Sons have installed systems at some of the most well known clubs in the world, please visit their website for more details. Back in 1979 Ken Pryor developed a innovative method for installing the pipes into a pitch without digging it all up. Two parallel trenches are dug at opposite sides of the pitch for the sub mains to be installed and a specially made plough is used to pull in the heating pipes.

Within the boiler house there are circulation pumps, shunt pumps, numerous valves, boilers, pressure makeup units, expansion vessels, temperature probes, thermostats and much, much more. The pipework is always finished to exceptionally high standards as are the electrical controls. Electrical Rewind & Repair Services Ltd liaise with K.E. Pryor & Sons and between them design a system which will work perfectly. We design and build the control panels and commission the systems on site. The system is PLC controlled and tailor made per job. A lot of the systems are similar and our aim is to design a system that takes on the complex task of controlling every component but is very simple for the operator to use. We provide an interface for BMS or similar integration. This allows the user to connect to their systems for remote control and monitoring if they wish to do so.

A typical single pitch system uses a gas or oil fired British built boiler. There is over 31000m of pipe used within the pitch plus the supply mains. There is approximately 120,000 litres (12 ton) of water within the full system.

The first job is the planning, this can take a week or two depending on the job. Starting with rough sketches through to finished CAD electrical and layout drawings. All panels comply to current legislation.

The finished, fully tested panel. This panel took 55 hours to complete, writing the PLC programme took another 8 hours. Over 300 metres of cable were used. Over 500 bootlace ferrules were used. Once complete It was a pleasure to stand back and admire a job well done.
