65kW Ship Anchor Chain Brake Motor

This is a 65KW Slip-Ring brake motor which drives an anchor chain on a ship. Often referred to as a Windlass Motor. It weighs 1970kg and measures just under 2 meters in length. This motor is sited on the deck of the ship and is subject to a range of weather conditions and regular soakings with salt water.

It was over ten years since the motor was last serviced. Nearly every bolt had to be cut off, drilled out, re-tapped and replaced. This job took many hours, many grazed knuckles and many swear words to complete.

When it was finished we were all proud of what we had accomplished. It's not every day we get to work on such a rare motor, although the labour costs were reasonably high it was still very worth while doing. The total price for the repair came to nearly £3000, a new replacement motor would have cost in excess of £44000 and been subject to a 12 week delivery time.
